May 2002

The Media Concepts /MPFI meeting was extremely informative. Steve Brown of 10-20 Productions gave us a brief but exceptional tour of the 2002 NAB with great commentary and images. We saw the newest in lighting, remote camera control systems and even the latest version of the “Video Toaster.” Thank you, Steve, for the tour of technology.

Our host, Bob Skidmore, provided guest speakers that provided a hands-on look at some new products as well. There were many exceptional products shown such as the FireStore DV to hard drive interface. It plugs into your “Firewire” port on your mini-DV camera and encodes directly to a hard drive of your choice. When the shooting is done you just plug the hard drive into your computer and start editing. The GY-DV300U MPEG4 Streaming DV camcorder is an outstanding DV camera that appears to have higher specifications than any of the other cameras in its price range. With the aid of a $1,000 adapter it can become a streaming broadcast system. The folks at Computer Advantage showed the new Cinema Display from Apple that provides HD video as well as a two-page full computer view. And finally the combination of JVC’s new projector and its D-VHS HDTC recorder provided images whose quality was as good as 35mm projector (actually, sorry it was better).
