August 2004

"HD Technology Today and Tomorrow"

The August meeting was exceptional from the Tech Track to the HD program. First the networking portion of the meeting always gives everyone a chance to talk to others in the industry and enjoy refreshments as well.

As usual, Steve Brown took the helm and navigated the MPFI group through a smooth meeting. Dennis Port “Membership Committee and Greeter” looks on while the many magazines that are available for free are shown behind Steve.

The Technical Track was a detailed discussion of the new section added to the Florida State laws allowing our professionals in the field of make-up to continue working without having a cosmetology license. Kim Garcia and Jodi Welch spoke about the importance of maintaining this freedom in Florida. The new law is in the 2004 Florida Statutes Title XXXII Chapter 477 Section 0135. Kim Garcia spent a lot of time and traveled to Tallahassee to assist legislators understand the impact of this law on the production industry. For a look into the current and future of “High Definition Television” we were provided the Panasonic Varicam cameras, HD monitor and portable editing system consisting of an Apple Macintosh G4 Laptop running “Final Cut Pro HD” from Fernando Guillot - Sales Development Manager of Panasonic.
Ken Sparks from Media Concepts provided the JVC HDV camera (JY-HD10U). Special Thanks for Panasonic and Media Concepts for making the arrangements to loan us the HDV Equipment.

Steve Mahrer, Director of Product Engineering out of the New Jersey Panasonic office, made a special trip to Tampa for the evening’s meeting. He provided an informational meeting, showing the many advantages available from the use of HD cameras. From ghosting effects, slow motion, high speed videography to the ability to bypass tape and provide editable files on solid-state memory cards. Our excellent model for the evening was Taylor Welch (Jodi's daughter).

Steve Mahrer went into great detail showing us the many features that digital cameras and HD have brought us. He showed how multiple cameras could be adjusted in seconds by just plugging in camera attribute files from a memory card. Those same files could be stored and updated from your current PDA.

After the formal meeting we were allowed to look and touch all of the equipment displayed at the meeting. It was a great evening! For more information contact:
