"Digital or Film – Where Are We?"

This month's meeting was held at JGS Media Services at 10781 75th street in Largo. As usual networking was fun and the food was great.
David Rosenblatt of Silver Image Interactive, Inc. talked about MOVA, a new software capture system for computer-generated imagery, that creates compellingly realistic synthetic actors by capturing the facial movements of real actors in much greater detail than is currently possible. Charles M. Bregg a longtime Director/ Cinematographer in the south gave us his  perspective as a cinematographer and a director, and taked about how far electronic origination has come and where it’s headed. Charlie made it clear that before you begin a production, you must know how the production will be used. Will it be shown in a theatre, played back on a DVD player, shown as a commercial on television or even used on a website.  The final use will determine the format.

Charlie brought many attendees back to earlier days of production and compared those techniques to the advances of today. In the electronic media there was two-inch Quad videotape, linear editing, RCA TK-44 cameras (weighing more than the cameraman!) – all excellent examples of the changes we have made in the world of video.

Charlie stated that the editor now has a different life through the use of digital storage and retrieval . . changing a scene becomes insignificant as compared to linear editing.  He truly believes that the editor is a partner with the director/producer and they form a creative team.

He questions the frame rate of 24p in digital cameras just because it simulates the film frame rate.  Taking the worst feature of film (24 frames per second, including the jitters) and duplicating that rate in video cameras is not the best way to emulate film.

Because of Charlies’ 44 years in the industry and his many years as a cinematographer, he brought an educated look to the world of digital today and states that he has become a believer and happy user of digital video.

A special thank you to Jay Gross and Kathy Fishback of JGS Media Services for gracious hosting of our MPFI meeting.
