"Crew Talk"
Our February MPFI meeting “CREW TALK” was held at Hillsborough Community College, thanks to our host Carl Schweibinz, Technology Manager at HCC. During our networking session, James Elbon (our resident 3D expert), demonstrated a slide show of his latest 3-D photo shoot along with 3D glasses to complete the experience. For more info, email James.elbon@operamail.com. Thanks James for this interesting presentation! Also, many ambitious students majoring in USF’s Television Production program attended to learn about some real world experiences of “CREW TALK.”

“CREW TALK” presenters Steve Brown (10-20 Productions), Joel Freedman (2 Hungry Dogs Productions) and Jim Siler (Green Flash Productions) discussed the how-to’s of hiring production crews including staged scenarios and humorous banter of the proper and improper ways to handle a “booking call” (where timing is everything!). Jim Siler was not present due to a last minute booking!

| Members listened intensely and offered their experiences during the discussion of the going rates for crew such as camera operators, sound operator, lighting director, prompter operator and production assistants and other considerations. |

Joel Freeman presented some tips on “Freelancer Expectations and Obligations.” Key factors working as a freelancer include being prompt, appropriately dressed, professional and capable for the job. Knowing your commitment to the contractor, getting it in writing and not forgetting to invoice are good words of advice to prepare you for the job ahead. Being a freelancer who is good with people, multifaceted and willing to work hard will likely gain you a reputation to keep you on top of Freelancer Crew-to-Call list!

| Steve Brown discussed the specifics of organizing a production crew including crew costs, determining when a job is a “firm book,” “soft hold” along with the nuances of “first right of refusal” and cancellation rates. Steve also discussed definitions of full work day and half day, how to cover expenses such as meals, travel, parking, rental equipment, expendables and liability insurance and creative ways to incorporate these factors into the overall cost of a production job. |
