February 2010
"Content is King" and "Social Media Marketing"
The February meeting of the Media Professionals of Florida was held at The International Academy of Design Technology. The food was delicious and as always we networked.
Part 1 “Social Media Marketing” - Rod Harlan, President of both: DriveDV, Inc. - a full service multimedia firm, and SITEdriver. Rod asked us "Are you using social media to grow your business?"
Rod gave us some impressive examples of how many people are using what media, such as: 1,000,000,000 – The number of YouTube videos viewed; 3,000.000 – The average number of Tweets per day on Twitter; 5,000,000,000 – The number of minutes spent on Facebook each day; 14,200,000 – The number of views Obama’s famous “Yes We Can” video got on YouTube.
This is an example of how Rod uses Twitter to send new technology information to his followers.
Rod gave us a number of reasons why we should be using social media, such as: Because 3 out of 4 Americans use social networking; because visiting social sites is now the 4th most popular online activity - ahead of personal email; and because time spent on social networks is growing at 3X the overall internet rate, accounting for about 10% of all internet time.
namechk is a site you can use to see if your desired username is available on the many different social sites.
What can you use social networking for? How about customer service, collaboration and to define your company’s social media strategy – just to name a few of the examples Rod gave us.
There are a number of additional to sites to look at such as Joomla, TweetDeck, Hootsuite, Wordpress. Site information is available below.
Part 2 “Content Is King” - Betty Cortez, owner of RipCord Web and Video Solutions asked, "How’s your marketing going? Are you thinking about creating your own website? Do you have a website? Do you maximize your presence?"
Betty uses Joomla which is an award-winning content management system (CMS) to build custom websites for her clients.
Betty covered the basic features of Joomla and explained how her company could build a Joomla site or expand a basic Joomla site using extensions created to provide more power to the content creator.
Betty has created a number of professionals sites including the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center.
Are you familiar with open source web development? Do you update your own website? Have you looked at joomla? Joomla is an open source program that can be used free of charge to develop an interactive website.
There is a ton of on-line help, information and expansion modules that can add spice to your Joomla site.
A special thanks to The International Academy of Design Technology for hosting another great Media Professionals of Florida meeting.
